As some of you that keep you ear to the ground may be aware that a new country code top level domain for Montenegro has been authorised. Luckily for the country of Montenegro the domain is simply .me. Since it was launched in May 2006 there has been huge interest in purchasing domains and doMEn (the organisation in charge of domain registrations) have experienced the greatest domain rush in the history of the world wide web.

On 11 September 2007, delegation of root name servers was approved by IANA, which established .me. The .me domain became properly active on 24 September 2007 and a “Public Invitation for selection of the Agent for domain registration under the national Internet domain of Montenegro” was posted on 14 November. doMEn d.o.o. was selected as the new registry operator in Montenegro.

Most .me domain names that were purchased were bought as domain hacks in English, and some in Dutch languages. .me has seen its greatest interest among English speaking countries including the United States (71%), the United Kingdom (6%), Canada (4%), and Australia (2%)[15].

One of the most expensive domain sold during the Land Rush period was insure.me that went for an astonishing $68,005. Shortly, this was then followed by the purchase of date.me, which was sold on the premium auction for $70,000. Other notable sales included love.me for $32,500, and hug.me for $20,000.

In Dutch, only verb combinations were popular, as only they made grammatical sense (as in English). E.g., reserveer.me, which can be translated as book.me, and repareer.me, repair.me. Most of the Dutch domains were sold outside the auction during the Go Live phase.

WordPress uses a .me domain, wp.me, as an URL shortener. This, along with Facebook’s fb.me and Yahoo!’s me.me are the only two letter .me domains, for which an exception was granted by doMEn.

Many of the premium domains were reserved such as rate.me or date.me. On 16 July 2008, registration was made available for all .me domains at various registrars. However, some premium domains did slip the net so to speak. For example:

The internet is a wonderful and magnificent thing. Young people today, growing up with easy access to the world’s knowledge via the internet, have no idea of how lucky they are.

I started playing in the 1970s with the famous Bert Weedon’s ‘Play in a Day’ book. I could never afford guitar lessons so I would take every opportunity to obsessively study the playing techniques and styles of every guitarist I managed to see.

Learning to play guitar today has been transformed by technology. DVDs, for example, can be played over and over again, unlike face to face guitar lessons. And the internet provides an ideal platform for the presentation of guitar tutorials.

There are loads of guitar playing teaching websites but by far the best for me is Youtube. You can find instructional videos on everything from choosing guitars to making your own electric guitar. There are plenty of videos that will help those who are just starting out with the guitar and lots more that are ideal for people like me, who’ve been playing for a while but want to learn more techniques and tunes.

Learning new guitar licks and techniques has become one of my favourite pass times. If it’s raining outside then you will find me scouring Youtube videos for blues tunes to learn and techniques to master. I think that my guitar playing skills have improved more in the past five years, thanks to Youtube, than it did in the prior twenty years.

Another useful feature is that the system is interactive. When I find a video that I like I will always make it one of my favourites and maybe drop the performer a comment to say thanks. I will often ask a question or two and the video maker will generally come back with a helpful answer. Its a bit like having any number of great guitarists as personal guitar playing consultants.

And Youtube is not just good for aspiring guitarists. You can find tutorials and examples of people playing a whole range of weird and wonderful musical instruments. In fact there are some great examples of people playing vegetables and even furniture.

I can’t help but feel a little envious of the young people who are just starting to learn today. I like to think that if I had been born at a time when the internet was available, providing this wealth of incredibly valuable instruction and guidance, who knows, I might have become the next Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan.
